ABOUT US

We are currently taking registration for 2011-2012, for more information please contact us.

Tender Loving Care (TLC) is a non-profit, early childhood center supported by Catholic Community Services (CCS). We are operated entirely by our members and all money collected by way of participation fees is used towards the operation of the center.

TLC provides:

- a place for children to learn through play
- conversation and language skill development
- school readiness & developmental skills

Every member of TLC participates on the Maintenance and Fundraising committees. Some members who are looking for more responsibility and participation may volunteer to join our administrative committee. Each member is unique and comes from different backgrounds and circumstances. HOWEVER, every member is valued equally. EVERY MEMBER IS IMPORTANT!

OUR PROGRAMS

EARLY EXPLORERS (2 YEARS)
Tuesday and Thursday, 9:00 am - 11:30 am

Our Early Explorers class consists of children who are 2 years old on or before September 30. Special attention is given to handling separation anxiety, which can be a concern at this stage. Every effort is made to make the children feel comfortable and secure, while at the same time giving them a sense of pride in their own emerging autonomy.

ACTIVE ADVENTURERS (3 YEARS)
Monday, Wednesday & Friday, 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Our Active Adventurers class consists of children who are 3 years old on or before September 30.

Here they will begin to learn some introductory preschool work such as recognizing their names, learning of colours, shapes and other important basics through rhyme, games, learning centers and crafts. Also, each child is given a place-mat with their name, address and phone number for snack time. This is a beginning step for our pre-K class and part of our kindergarten preparation.

KINDER KIDS (4 YEARS)
Monday - Friday, 12:45 pm - 3:45 pm

Our Kinder Kids class consist of children who are 4 years old on or before Sept. 30th.  Our program is designed to encourage and stimulate the children’s natural curiosity to explore and learn.  Learning Center Activities are prepared to help ensure they have the necessary skills to enter Kindergarten with confidence and pride.

In this class, our educator Lisa Stiveletti (with an AEC in Early Childhood Education from Vanier College) and her assistant Cheryl Yeoman, will work with the children in learning centers designed for pre-K students. Some of these centers include early math, literacy, computers and language. We like to cover the following topics throughout the year with our pre-K students:

Language:
- The alphabet
- Recognizing lower and upper case letters
- Random remove Letter recognition
- Pencil grip
Math:
- Counting and number recognition
- Shapes
- One to one correspondence
Personal Information:
- Name
- Address
- Telephone number
Social Skills:
- Ability to share
- Ability to focus
- Ability to work in a group
Self-Help skills:
- Responsibility (i.e. putting on their own jackets)
- How to use classroom tools
- Confidence
The World Around Us:
- Days of the week
- Seasons
- Holidays and special events

At TLC we consider our program very unique and special. We are a cooperative preschool that is affordable due to the fund-raising our parents kindly take an active role in. We also have help from donations and support from organizations such as CCS. We believe that our program is a good starting point for children who need part time schooling before they enter kindergarten as it prepares them for the new challenges they will face in an elementary school.

HISTORY

The preschool programs were initiated and continue to be supported by CCS (Catholic Community Services) and included groups based in Verdun, Ville Emard, and Lasalle. The primary motivation in starting the program was to offer support and education in parenting of preschoolers.

The first group started in Pointe St. Charles in 1979 and gradually was extended to the other communities. Our Lasalle group started in 1981, and was primarily a playgroup for many years with the emphasis on having a support system for parents. Over the years, TLC has evolved along with the needs of the Lasalle community.

In the past few years, the classroom itself has transformed from a playgroup to that of a preschool setting, while keeping the spirit of community and support intact.
